“I know this is short notice, but can I hire you for a session in two days?” I looked at those words in the DM I had just received and thought about my booked calendar. My hands were poised to message back with an apology that I was booked, when I saw it was a past client who had messaged me.

I had photographed her maternity photos at Galveston Beach a month or so before and knew I couldn’t say no to a loyal client. She had loved her maternity photos so much after asking for a quick editing turnaround to use the photos for her baby shower.

“OF COURSE” I messaged back. I was so happy to meet her little one and was delighted to see she had inspo images ready to share with me.

Her images were exactly what I offer for an inhome newborn session: a mixture of posed and candid images that celebrate family, motherhood, and this dear new family member.

When I arrived to my client’s home, I could see all the outfits and props she had accumulated on her kitchen counter and I was overjoyed to see her preparation. Especially in the first few days and weeks of motherhood, it is totally understandable to have decision-fatigue and to let your brain rest as you soak in those sweet, precious moments with your sweet baby. But having a vision and preparing outfits and props really helps your photographer out. Many times, we don’t know you personally, so seeing what you like gives us an upper-leg at making sure you are satisfied and OVERJOYED with your gallery in the end.

The whole session went by without any issue. Of course, we had to take a milk break at some point, but LIttle One was calm and as beautiful as I imagined he would be. I did many of the shots on mom’s inspo board, and was able to do some of my own poses as inspiration struck. Baby Boy’s big sister (a cat) followed us around and even posed for a couple of photos as he kept the baby’s spot warm during Feed Time.

Walking out of their house more than an hour and a half later, I smiled to myself. As a patient Houston photographer, I knew that no one can set the schedule of a newborn session. Infants are unpredictable and sometimes temperamental, but a family photographer always has to understand that these sessions can be time-consuming but are so worth it for the families you work with.
