3 Affordable Photography Locations in Houston for Family Photos

Finding the perfect location for family photos in Houston doesn’t have to mean paying a hefty location fee. Some of my favorite places to photograph families offer beautiful scenery, plenty of variety, and room for kids to be themselves; all without requiring an expensive venue rental.

As a Houston and Friendswood family photographer, I’m always looking for locations that photograph beautifully while also being practical for real families. Things like parking, bathrooms, shade, places for kids to explore, and variety in the scenery can make a big difference during a family session.

Here are three Houston-area locations I recommend for families looking for beautiful photos without a significant location fee.

1. Houston Arboretum & Nature Center

Address: 4501 Woodway Drive, Houston, TX 77024
Parking: $7.50 for non-members

If you want variety in your family photos, the Houston Arboretum is one of my favorite options. The different trails offer a surprising number of backdrops, so your gallery can have a lot of visual variety without needing to drive from one location to another.

Depending on the trail and season, you may find wooded areas, marshy landscapes, open grassy spaces, bridges, benches, and seasonal flowers. Spring can be especially beautiful when flowers are blooming, while the mature trees provide beautiful greenery and shade throughout much of the year.

The variety also makes this a great choice for families with children. Instead of expecting little ones to stand still and smile for an entire session, we can use the trails and different areas of the park to keep things moving and allow them to explore.

Why I love it for family photos

  • Lots of different backdrops within one location
  • Wooded and open areas
  • Seasonal flowers
  • Bridges and benches that can be incorporated into photos
  • Plenty of natural greenery
  • Bathrooms readily available
  • Good option for families who want a natural, relaxed look

One thing to keep in mind

Because this is a nature preserve, mosquitoes can be an issue during certain times of the year, particularly in areas with more vegetation or moisture. I recommend bringing mosquito spray, especially during warmer months.

The parking fee for non-members is currently $7.50, so while this isn’t completely free, it is still a relatively inexpensive option for a full family photography session.

Best for: Families who want a natural gallery with lots of variety and beautiful greenery.

2. Challenger 7 Memorial Park

Address: 2301 W. NASA Parkway, Webster, TX 77598
Parking: Free

If you’re looking for a beautiful outdoor location without a parking fee, Challenger 7 Memorial Park is a wonderful option.

The park has a more open, natural feel, with beautifully cleared areas, mature trees, and tall grasses and flowers that change with the seasons. The combination of open space and mature trees gives us room to create both wide environmental portraits and more intimate family images.

One of the things that makes this location particularly fun is the wildlife. Depending on the season and time of day, you may spot deer, families of deer, or even armadillos while you’re there. There are also signs of wild hog activity in some areas, although I have never personally encountered one during a session.

For families with young children, another bonus is the playground nearby. It can be a great way to let kids burn off some energy before or after their session.

Why I love it for family photos

  • Free parking
  • Beautiful open areas
  • Mature trees
  • Seasonal tall grasses and flowers
  • Opportunities to see wildlife
  • Wooden benches throughout the park
  • Clean, well-maintained setting
  • Bathrooms available near the parking area
  • Playground nearby for children

Best for: Families looking for a relaxed, natural setting with free parking and plenty of room for kids to explore.

3. The Menil Collection Museum Grounds

Address: 1533 Sul Ross Street, Houston, Texas, 77006
Parking: Free

For families who want something a little more refined and editorial, the grounds surrounding the Menil Collection offer a completely different look from a traditional nature park.

The outdoor grounds provide a beautiful combination of architecture, mature trees, greenery, open lawn, and modern elements. Because there are several different areas to work with, we can create a gallery that feels varied while staying within the same general location.

There is a lush green lawn that works especially well for playful images with children, including photos of kids running and interacting with their families. Mature trees add softness and character, while the architectural areas create a more sophisticated, polished feel.

There are also areas with pillars that give the setting a more relaxed, classic look without feeling overly formal.

One of the things I love about photographing here is that you don’t have to choose between an urban look and greenery—you can have both. The grounds offer glimpses of the city while still providing plenty of natural elements.

Outdoor photography on the grounds is welcome as long as visitors are respectful of the property and other guests, and no permit is required for standard outdoor family sessions.

Why I love it for family photos

  • Free parking
  • No permit required for outdoor family photography
  • Refined, sophisticated setting
  • Mature trees and greenery
  • Large open lawn
  • Architectural backdrops
  • Areas for kids to run and play
  • A mix of modern and classic elements
  • Great option for families wanting something different from a traditional park

Best for: Families who love a clean, timeless, slightly editorial look with a mix of greenery and architecture.
